Contribution to EU Objectives
The aim of the project is to provide damage dosimeters based on artists' materials
and piezoelectric quartz crystal technology. This directly addresses the objectives
for Key Action " City of Tomorrow and Cultural Heritage" specifically
the section 4.2.1 which deals with improved damage assessment to cultural heritage.
The use of dosimeters for quantifying damage will particularly enable the synergistic
effects of the different pollutants to be assessed, as proposed by EC directives
on urban air quality. As a result of this there will be the opportunity for
improvement in best practices and preventive conservation practices. These monitoring
programmes which will take place in a range of historical buildings will focus
on specific locations and this will also give opportunities for assessing distinct
microclimates in the vicinity of artworks. Additionally the use of passive samplers
both indoors and outdoors will provide essential information on indoor to outdoor
values.
